Kyorugi

Kyorugi, or sparring, is an event where 2 contestants fight with rules and regulations. The contestants wear items of protection, as per WT rules, so that competition may be safely conducted up to an Olympic level. A win can occur by points, or if one competitor is unable to continue (knockout)
Items include:

  • Hogu – Chest protector
  • Head guard
  • Gum shield
  • Forearm guards
  • Groin guard
  • Shin guards
  • Gloves
  • Foot protectors

Competitions are held between members of the same sex, age category, weight class, and belt division. Depending on the level of competition, these categories can change, but same-sex always fights.
An attack that makes contact with the opponent’s Hogu scores a point, this is usually a kick, but punches are also permitted.
Kicks to anywhere on the opponent’s Hogu and head are all permitted. Kicks below the belt or on the spine are not permitted. Punches to the head or anywhere other than the Hogu are also not permitted.
